2010 Southern Spring Home & Garden Show Get Your Kids Dirty Next Friday night is Family Gardening Night at the show. WSOC 103.7’s Charlie and Debbie will join Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens and Organic Plant Healthcare to help your kids learn about gardening. At 6 pm, landscape architect Mary Taylor Haque will give a talk based on her book Designing Outdoor Environments for Children.

Domestic Violence Advocacy Council

Next Tuesday's free domestic violence Lunch and Learn program, presented by the Domestic Violence Advocacy Council, is entitled “Alternatives Approaches to Domestic Violence Education.” Johnson C. Smith University Professor Dr. Dezette Johnson will be sharing her recent research that focuses on unique ways to educate people about domestic violence.

Dr. Johnson is Department Chair and Field Director in the Department of Social Work at Johnson C. Smith University. Her areas of expertise include school social work, teen dating violence, single parenting, cultural diversity, women’s issues, and program evaluation. Certificates of Completion will be provided.

The program is presented by Mecklenburg County Community Support Services Women’s Commission and its partners on the Domestic Violence Advocacy Council (DVAC).

Education Center (basement of Food Court closer to College Street)

Validated parking is available at the On-The-Green parking garage on South Tryon Street between Second and Stonewall streets. If guest spots are taken, go to the lower levels and park in any non-staff St. Peter’s Church space. Bring your ticket to the workshop to be validated. A free trolley runs the length of Tryon Street every seven minutes. Participants are encouraged to bring their lunch.

The free monthly seminars are open to the public and are held on the first Tuesday of each month. Representatives from local help agencies serve as presenters. The DVAC will continue to organize these workshops as an ongoing effort to broaden the public’s awareness of the issues surrounding domestic violence. 2010 CIAA Events and Parties

The annual CIAA Tournament is taking place in Charlotte for the fifth consecutive year, February 23-27.

Even though there will be five days of college basketball going on at Time Warner Cable Arena, it's all of the surrounding events and after-parties that create the most excitement. Below is a list of those events, and we'll update the list a couple of more times leading up to CIAA Week (more events are certain to be announced by promoters).

Monday, February 22
The Annual CIAA Media Mixer The Charlotte Area Association of Black Journalists (CAABJ) presents this networking event each year during CIAA Week to bring together professionals working in media and communications.
