Charlotte SCORE and AT&T Advertising Solutions are hosting this half day event at The Employers Association office, 3020 W Arrowood Road I Charlotte from 7:30 am to 1 pm.  This seminar will provide small business owners the opportunity to experience small group seminars directed at generating new customers. Learn the successful techniques other small firms are using. Network with other small business owners. Experience a hands-on marketing seminar.  Attendance is FREE; however, space is limited and available on a first-come, first-serve basis to current business owners. October 8, 2012                NC - Teen Entrepreneurship Symposium              Charlotte
This event will take place on Monday October 8, 2012 from 9:00 am to 2:30pm on the campus of The University of North Carolina - Charlotte.  The event will focus on giving high school students various perspectives on entrepreneurship while teaching key entrepreneurial concepts in a hands-on setting. During the Symposium students will hear from keynote speaker Mr. Michael J. DeLazzer, creator of the Redbox movie kiosk, as he shares his entrepreneurial journey and road to success. In addition, students will attend break-out sessions that focuses on various facets of entrepreneurship, a networking lunch and a panel discussion. Each break-out session is presented by a Nationally-recognized teen entrepreneur.   Teen Entrepreneurship Symposium participants; develop and strengthen their entrepreneurial mindset, increase social and networking skills, and gain an in-depth understanding of entrepreneurship. October 15, 2012              Deadline for BIG AND TASTY COMPETITION        STATEWIDE
Blue Ridge Food Ventures and Mountain BizWorks announce the launch of The Big Tasty! Making’ It to Market Food Product Idea Contest with the generous support of the Tobacco Trust Fund. 
Objective: To find and help grow a small business in North Carolina that wants to introduce a new food product or service to the market. Entries will be judged on their commercial appeal and business viability, as well as their flavor, unique qualities, and best use of local ingredients. Prizes valued at more than $10,000 in cash and services will be awarded. 
Eligibility: Any North Carolina resident is eligible to submit a food product or food-related service that is not a packaged meat, dairy or low-acid product. The product cannot contain more than .5% alcohol. Other restrictions may apply. How the Contest Works: Contestants submit a packet that includes an entry form, a $10 non-refundable entry fee, and an “inspiration” board or booklet that could include photos, videos, web links, packaging ideas, or even magazine clippings to explain and illustrate the product or service idea or concept. Deadline for submission is October 15, 2012. Entry form and details at www.blueridgefoodventures.org  or call 828.348.0130.  A panel of judges will review the entries and select semi-finalists by November 1, 2012.  Prizes: The grand prize winner gets $2,500 in cash and 100 free hours of incubator time, including use of the commercial kitchen and equipment at Blue Ridge Food Ventures. Up to two runners-up each receive $1,000 each and 50 hours of incubator time. All winners also receive a free Foundations Business Planning Course through Mountain BizWorks. In total, prizes valued at more than $10,000 in cash and services will be awarded.

NC Military Business Center is hosting the Defense Contractor Academy. The Academy will offer advanced instruction and a certificate of completion to existing, small business defense contractors to provide the tools needed to grow the defense contracting portion of their business portfolio.  A series of 9 classes will be offered, beginning on November 13, 2012 and ending November 15, 2012.  Each session will include presentation of material and either a panel or guest business(es) to discuss their experiences regarding the topic of the session.  www.ncmbc.us/FALL2012DCA.php.
