How many of us have reached or are actively working toward Goal # 4 in our Career Management Plan - Generate Multiple Sources of Income?
When I joined the Empowering Today's Professionals (ETP) I placed primary emphasis on Goal # 1: Finding a Job I look forward to going to on Monday morning. I was seeking a new career
opportunity that would be more challenging and financially rewarding. I was also concerned about job security and felt a position with another company would afford me more stability. Through learning the ETP 7 Step Job Search methodology and networking with other professionals, I would be closer to reaching my goal and I could help others do the same.

The ETP Network philosophy helped me to immediately embrace being the CEO of Me, Inc.. I realized that I needed to accept full responsibility over my current situation. I also began to eliminate the negative thoughts and behaviors that were holding me back from achieving success. It was through this process that my mind became open to new opportunities that would allow me to be in control of my current and future financial security. I decided to stay in my current position when I realized that I could reach my career and financial goals by starting my own part-time, home based business with a network marketing company.
I was initially skeptical in believing network marketing could work but soon realized this belief was rooted in my lack of knowledge about the industry. Network Marketing (sometimes referred to as Multi Level Marketing) is wrongly confused with illegal pyramid schemes that convince people they can make money without working. Today‘s quality Network Marketing companies offer a legitimate product or service that consumers are willing to pay for, and that compensation is based on the movement of those products and services not recruitment. Income levels are based on individual efforts and rewards come to those who consistently follow a proven system for success.
I also needed to overcome the belief that I had no time to start and manage my own home based business while working full time. As a mother of 6-year old twins with a full time career, I have been running a successful network marketing business in the health and wellness industry for over a year. I quickly learned from others how to work this business into the course of my everyday activities. The basic premise is in talking to people you come in contact with daily and working your business into the nooks and crannies of your day.
According to the Direct Selling Association, nearly 175,000 people start their own network marketing businesses each week. This industry is represented by over 15 million people generating $ 30 billion in the U.S. and 67 million people generating $ 110 billion worldwide*. Many of these people are professionals who already know how to network and are seeking alternatives to generating additional income and achieving greater financial security. Starting a network marketing business is a viable solution as it (1) Requires minimal investment to start up; (2) Can turn a profit quickly; (3) Has a short learning curve and (4) Caters to part-time allowing flexibility and freedom.
When there are hundreds of network marketing companies to choose from, how do you determine which one is best for you? According to Dr. Charles King, renowned professor of business practices, there are four key factors to consider when choosing a network marketing company: marketplace demand; consumable products; timing and trends; and ability to leverage your time. Let‘s look at each one more closely. There must be a market for your product or service at a price consumers are willing to pay.
A company with a broad product line that appeals to all types of individuals is a home run! Second, products that are consumable translate to repeat purchases. Consumable products such as personal care items are used up and re-ordered as opposed to other types of one time or infrequently purchased products. Third, the company and its products must not only address today‘s timing and trends but have the ability to have longevity. Health and wellness companies are an excellent choice as this current trend is predicted to be the next trillion dollar industry. Lastly, the ability to leverage your time by duplicating your efforts through sponsoring others into your business allows you to work part time while increasing your earning potential.
We all need to protect our financial security -- even those who are satisfied in our current careers generating a healthy income. Corporate downsizing, economic downturns, the stability of our retirement or pension funds, and unexpected life events must force us to ―prepare for impact. Growing numbers of professionals are looking at the other side of today‘s global economic uncertainty – the opportunity side – by starting part time home based businesses with network marketing companies.
Wealthy businessmen such as Robert Kiyosaki and Donald Trump endorsed Network Marketing by dedicating a chapter on the subject in their book Why We Want You to Be Rich. World-renowned economist, Paul Zane Pilzer, has predicted a massive growth of 10 million new millionaires coming from network marketers in the health and wellness industry.
Whether you are looking to earn $ 500, $ 1000 or $ 3000 per month as supplemental income or building a business with greater income potential, network marketing is a viable business model that can create long term, residual income leading to greater financial security. *Direct Selling Association (DSA) 2007 statistics.
